I have enjoyed the TV Show GLEE ever since the preview last spring. First class musical productions (sometimes 3 or 4 in one episode!); fast, witty writing; and Jane Lynch (hi-larry-us!!!). And please, can somebody tell me who, between the ages of 19 and 25 on the Top 40 Charts can sing HALF as well as these kids???? (Plus, Mark Salling is frickin' HAWT! And he's 27, so I'm not being all cougar-y here.)
But one of the things I enjoy most is how well the human condition is played out on a High School stage. We all know how brutal things can be in High School, but do any of us really understand how well those 4 years prepared us for the Real World?
Last night, I was particularly moved by one scene. When Kurt tanks the High F because he doesn't want his dad to suffer, I think I cried. It was amazing. His voice is so clear and crisp. Contrasting that with the full voice of Lea Michele was genius. Take a listen:
I have never heard this sung by anyone else than Idina Menzel before last night (is it me, or is Lea Michele an Idina, Jr.???). In my mind, the song meant one thing: and that was from Elphaba's perspective. (OOooo oooo oooo - did you hear about this???) But I checked it out on YouTube today, and was moved to tears again.
It meant something different to me. I am Kurt, and I am letting go of things I thought I wanted in favor of things I love, and those I know to be of greater importance - regardless of what everyone else around me says.
I bought the Glee soundtrack on iTunes today. Now I can Defy Gravity any time I turn on my CD player.
P.S. I am a Tenor. Have been since age 11. But I am proud to say that after 20 minutes of warm-up and 30 minutes of singing, I, Thorny Tree Lady, was able to hit that High F without having to go falsetto. Srsly: I did it full belt! Who 'da woman?? Me, 'datz who!!!

this was the first Glee episode I've watched. WOW!! I was hooked! I set up the DVR and will watch it weekly now. Guess I need to catch up on all the other episodes on HULU....
Good job, hitting that F. I can hit it once in a while when I'm warming up with my voice teacher and I don't look and see what note he is playing.
